Howrah-Hyderabad East Coast Express

It was not long ago that I was having a conversation with fellow railway enthusiasts over the excess time trains spend to cover the nine-km distance between Secunderabad and Hyderbad. Then a dreadful journey undertaken in 2001 came to my mind. During a holiday/pilgrimage, we boarded the East Coast Express from Khammam to Hyderabad. Khammam, on the red corridor, is where the up and down Kerala Expresses cross. It was my maiden trip to the State Capital and the loco was a WAM-4 from Vijayawada. The entire 259-km stretch would have been just fine, but after reaching Secunderabad the nightmare started. We took close to 45 minutes to reach Hyderabad and the downpour that September day did not help our cause.
