Tiruchi-Mayiladuthurai Express

A fast day connection between the two towns, that lie on the banks of the river Kaveri. I had taken this train in 2012 to cover the Commissioner of Railway Safety’s inspection of the newly-laid Mayiladuthurai Junction-Tiruvarur line. You have no option but to bear the searing heat of central Tamil Nadu as you cross Thanjavur and Kumbakonam. The rake of the Mysore-Mayiladuthurai Express is used for this service (South Western Railway rake).

The CRS inspection was a success, and trains avoided the circuitous route to Tiruvarur via Thanjavur. The straight stretch between Mayiladuthurai and Tiruvarur also helped the Railways save a tonne of money on operating costs especially for freighters. The loco clocked a top speed of 120kmph during the speed trial. Many officials did want the Loco Pilot to touch 140kmph being a flat stretch and just three coaches.

Sections covered: Tiruchchirapalli Junction-Mayiladuthurai Junction
